The Urban Studies Institute at Georgia State University conducts top-level urban research, offers an innovative and specialized interdisciplinary curriculum, and engages with stakeholders in metropolitan Atlanta and in other cities around the world. The Institute’s research agenda ranges from local to global, from urban theory to policy research. Research themes emphasize urban economic resilience, inclusive development, and urban sustainability. The Institute was founded in 2017. It is housed in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies but its research and teaching engagements reach across the University. It is presently composed of five tenured or tenure track faculty, two postdoctoral researchers, and 25 affiliate faculty from a range of schools and disciplines. Additional hires and appointments are in progress.

The Institute is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a two-year period, to begin in the fall of 2018 (before January 1 of 2019).

Postdoctoral researcher on urban impacts of climate change
We seek an outstanding postdoctoral researcher with expertise on urban resilience in the face of global climate change. The postdoctoral researcher will work collaboratively with USI faculty to further the Institute’s research agenda, and will develop independent research projects. The successful candidate will have a general interest and knowledge of the urban ramifications of climate change (global warming, extreme weather events, sea water level rise) in relation to urban infrastructures, real estate markets, economic and social/ residential geographies, public health, and planning/governance adaptation strategies. We invite applications from early-stage scholars who are energized in an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment. The postdoctoral researcher will not be required to teach but will be given the opportunity to teach one or two courses for the duration of the appointment.


  • All requirements completed for the PhD in urban studies, real estate, sustainability science, human/physical geography, urban planning, public policy, or other related disciplines;
  • General knowledge of urban resilience in relation to global climate change;
  • Specific interest in the impact of sea level rise on (residential) real estate markets, and willingness to take an active part in related collaborative interdisciplinary research;
  • Good knowledge of U.S. real estate industry, valuation models, finance, etc.
  • Strong quantitative & qualitative methodological skills; strong communication skills;
  • Strong skills in GIS and statistical programs such as STATA, SAS, or R;
  • Experience analyzing the results of climate models.


  • Experience working with practitioners and transdisciplinary approaches;
  • International experience;
  • Familiarity with cities that are particularly exposed to seawater level rise, such as Miami or Houston;
  • Affinity with comparative urban research.
