Best Book in Urban Affairs
Nomination Deadline: September 12, 2018
Decision by: January 25, 2019

This award is an annual opportunity. We welcome books on any urban context in the world. The purpose of the award is to encourage high-quality research on urban issues and reward cogent writing on urban affairs. The award will be presented during the Awards and Recognition Luncheon held during the annual spring UAA conference.

The recipient(s) will receive a plaque, $500 honorarium, complimentary conference registration, $500 in travel support, two nights of complimentary lodging (at the conference during which the award is presented), and an invitation to the annual VIP Dinner. See UAA website for full details and nomination instructions.



Contribution to the Field of Urban Affairs

Decision by: January 25, 2019

In 2014, the Urban Affairs Association (UAA) inaugurated the Contribution to the Field of Urban Affairs Award to recognize individuals whose body of work has contributed to defining the field.  One or more awards will be given annually at the UAA spring conference.

Award recipients receive a plaque, lifetime UAA membership, complimentary registration for all UAA conferences, and an invitation to the annual VIP Dinner. The award recipient will participate in a special session at the annual UAA conference to share her/his research, its findings and implications for practice and policy. See UAA website for full details and nomination instructions.


Marilyn J. Gittell Activist Scholar
Nomination Deadline: November 30, 2018
Decision by: January 25, 2019

UAA and SAGE Publications sponsor an annual award to highlight the work of a locally-focused activist scholar. The award is designed to focus on the research of an individual who is, or has been engaged in field-based research in an urban context (anywhere in the world). The research would ideally incorporate direct engagement with local community-based organizations and/or local residents around a policy area of high importance.

UAA provides a special award plaque, an honorarium of $1,000, conference registration waiver, and an invitation to the annual VIP dinner. A press release will be prepared announcing the winner. The award recipient will participate in a special session at the annual UAA conference to share her/his research, its findings and implications for practice and policy. See the UAA website for additional details and nomination instructions.


Alma H. Young Emerging Scholar        
Nomination Deadline: November 30, 2018
Decision by: January 25, 2019

The Urban Affairs Association gives an annual award for emerging scholars whose work exemplifies outstanding scholarship in urban affairs.  Eligibility:  Students pursuing doctoral research related to urban affairs, regardless of academic discipline, are eligible to apply.

The recipient receives a $1,000 honorarium, a plaque, a complimentary registration to the conference, and an invitation to the Annual VIP Dinner Reception. The award winner will be presented with the plaque and honorarium at the annual Awards Luncheon held during the spring conference.   • Best Article Published in the Journal of Urban Affairs
    Decision by: January 25, 2019
    Only papers accepted by JUA and published in the 2018 volume are eligible.This award will be presented to the author(s) of the article selected by a special committee appointed by the Governing Board Chair. The award recipient(s) receives a $1000 honorarium (Shared among co-authors if applicable), a plaque, complimentary conference registration, and an invitation to the Annual VIP Dinner Reception.
  • Best Conference Paper
    Decision by: January 25, 2019
    Submission deadline was July 15, 2018.This award will be given to the author(s) of the paper selected by a special committee appointed by the Board Chair.  Eligible papers are those presented at the UAA conference in Toronto, and submitted to the Journal of Urban Affairs for review by the July 15, 2018 deadline. The award recipient(s) receives a $1000 honorarium (shared among co-authors if applicable), a plaque, complimentary conference registration, and an invitation to the Annual VIP Dinner Reception.
