The School of Planning in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati (DAAP/UC) is actively seeking candidates to fill a faculty position focused on research, teaching, and service in the area of community development and housing. The School of Planning (SOP) prepares professionals for distinguished practice and spatially based approaches with a focus on “livable places,” and the creation of “communities that enrich people’s lives.” The School of Planning academic programs (PhD in Regional Development Planning, Master of Community Planning, Master of Landscape Architecture, Bachelor of Science in Horticulture, Bachelor of Science in Urban Studies, Bachelor of Urban Planning) offer specific coursework about the planning and design of innovative futures for urban communities and regions. The SOP’s MCP, MLA, and BUP programs follow a cooperative education model, in which UC is the oldest in country and first in the nation for public universities. The School has a Coverdell Fellows Program for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and offers a joint MCP-JD degree. The School of Planning’s graduate planning program is ranked first among small schools, fourth in the Midwest and 20th in the nation by The 2019 Planetizen Guide to Graduate Urban Planning Programs. The Cincinnati Metro Region is a rich setting for urban research and teaching. Its inhabitants experience big-city amenities while enjoying a small-town friendliness and collaborative feel that is characteristic of the Midwest.
The School of Planning is a leader in impacting urban futures. The faculty includes: editors of Interdisciplinary Journal of Signage and Wayfinding; co-editor of Children, Youth, and Environments; book review editor of Journal of Urban Affairs; Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners; members of the American Institute of Certified Planners; Fellows of the American Society of Landscape Architects; members of the American Society of Landscape Architects; and Planning Accreditation Board site visitors and visit leaders. The faculty also includes former Fulbright scholars and the majority of the faculty has extensive overseas experience and come from a diversity of backgrounds. The SOP is deeply engaged with regional government agencies and non-profit organizations, from which it draws adjunct faculty and public speakers, in addition to occasional classroom lecturers.
Over the past decade, DAAP has fostered cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research and teaching. In addition to the DAAP Community Design Center and the Niehoff Urban Studio, DAAP has successfully established a Transportation Design program with global partners in industry and academia, the LiveWell Collaborative as a campus-wide model of an external interdisciplinary learning center, the Communication in the Urban Environment initiative focused on understanding how the design of urban systems, structures and artifacts (including signage) affect interpersonal communication, and the Vacant Lots: Occupied program, designed to empower community. Further, DAAP faculty are major contributors to a body of scholarly works that the UC Press has identified as focusing on “community engagement and global social justice.”
Responsibilities: Will teach and conduct research in the area of community development and community engagement along with housing and affordable housing and closely related areas, including but not limited to racial and income disparities; social justice; local development; neighborhood revitalization; real estate development; health communities and food systems; and management of community organizations. Faculty are expected to teach 2 courses per semester in an academic year in studio, lecture or workshop settings. A full-time faculty member serves on various School, College, and/or University committees. Teaching in the School of Planning includes introductory as well as advanced-level graduate and undergraduate courses in the area of the applicant’s expertise, courses include but not limited to Community Development, Housing Systems, Urban Applications of Economic Concepts, Urban Spatial Structure, Social Justice and the City, Structure and Dynamics of Human Settlements, Methods of Research, and Quantitative Methods.
Minimum Qualifications: All of the following prior to effective date of the appointment:
At the Assistant rank,
- PhD degree in urban planning or related discipline
- Must have published at least 1 article in a peer-reviewed journal
At the Associate rank,
- PhD degree in urban planning or related discipline
- Must have published at least 5 articles in a peer-reviewed journal
- 5 academic years (post-graduate degree) of University-level teaching experience in urban planning or related field
