Dear UAA Community,

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the UAA Governing Board and Executive Office staff met recently to discuss the spring UAA conference (originally scheduled for April 21-24, 2021 in Nashville), and future professional support activities. After thorough discussion, the Governing Board approved the following plans:

No In-Person UAA Conference in April 2021
The Governing Board and Executive Office unanimously concluded that any in-person event would risk the safety and health of our colleagues. Moreover, we feel that the personal and professional demands that so many of you are faced with, should be respected.

Virtual Activities in April 2021
(Free registration to all UAA members!)

To support our community, UAA will organize and offer the following virtual activities, instead of a conference:

  • Professional development workshops for graduate students and early career professionals (academic and non-academic positions). Applications are required to participate in workshops, and space is limited. UAA will issue announcements in advance of each opportunity.
  • A day of special webinars on timely topics such as: COVID and the City, Urban Racial Justice, and Global Urban Neopopulism
  • A celebratory session to recognize and congratulate our annual award recipients
  • Annual business meeting (open to all UAA members)
  • During these April activities, we will not have traditional panel, colloquy, or poster sessions. The next open call for participation (with individual presentations) will be issued in July 2021 for the April 2022 annual conference.

***All virtual activities are free for UAA members (institutional member representatives, individual members, and student members). Non-members are welcome, but must pay a small fee to participate.

Intensive Workshops in Summer 2021
(Free registration to all UAA members!)

  • UAA will sponsor intensive workshops focused on high-priority topics: online teaching, research strategies (e.g., ethnographic, comparative), job search strategies (academic/non-academic), writing proposals and getting grants. Applications are required to participate in workshops, and space is limited.  UAA will issue announcements in advance of each opportunity.

Future UAA Conferences
We are working with our hotel partners on plans to bring the UAA Annual Meeting to Washington, DC in the spring of 2022, and in the spring of 2023, to visit Nashville! The details are looking good. But as always, we will monitor public health conditions to ensure that your experience is both safe and valuable.

Thank you for your continued support of the Urban Affairs Association.

Sincerely,

Dr. Thomas J. Vicino, UAA Governing Board Chair (on behalf of the UAA Board)
Dr. Margaret Wilder, UAA Executive Director (on behalf of the Executive Office)
