The Dean provides academic, intellectual, and administrative leadership of the Pardee School and promotes excellence in all aspects of the School’s teaching, research, and outreach missions. The next Dean will lead the ongoing development of the vision, goals, and strategies of the Pardee School, and will lead efforts to cooperate and collaborate with critical partners internal and external to the university. The Dean is responsible for effective development and management of financial resources, human resources, and physical infrastructure and for engaging in fundraising and stewardship.

The ideal candidate will be globally recognized with demonstrated leadership abilities, substantial administrative and development experience, strong visibility within the academic community and/or public sector, and the capacity to exercise policy leadership at the local, state, national and international levels. The Dean will have a strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching and practice, and a demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a high level of personal and professional commitment, enthusiasm, integrity, and pride in the values of the University and the School;
  • Establish appropriate mechanisms to recruit, select, support, and retain highly qualified faculty, staff, and students, with particular attention to those from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups;
  • Promote a positive, diverse, and inclusive environment that ensures all faculty, administrators, staff, and students treat one another with dignity and respect;
  • Oversee the strategic development and effective use of financial, human, and technological resources and physical infrastructure.
  • Support faculty and student research and public engagement.
  • Communicate with a wide audience of students, faculty, University administrators and leaders, alumni, community members, and potential benefactors;
  • Motivate and facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration in research, education, and practice between Pardee and the other schools, colleges, and centers of the University.

Required Qualifications

  • A record of distinguished scholarly accomplishment and a strong commitment to research, teaching and service in a field appropriate for appointment as a full professor at Boston University;
  • A demonstrated record of accomplishment of progressive and consistently responsible administrative experience and academic leadership, and a portfolio of professional successes;
  • Strong and proven capabilities in complex organizational management including strategic planning, financial stewardship, budget creation, resource allocation, human resource management, risk management, and related decision-making;
  • The proven ability to work collaboratively with leaders across organizations;
  • A demonstrated appreciation of the potential contribution of the breadth of fields across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences to the mission of the Pardee School and a commitment to excellence both in discipline-based and interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching;
  • A willingness to participate in fundraising and stewardship;
  • Impeccable integrity, professionalism, sound judgment, and the commitment to service that constitutes philanthropic leadership.
