Data Dive: Year 1 Findings from the NORC Entrepreneurship in the Population (EPOP) Survey

Join us for a Data Dive into a new survey conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago and funded by the Kauffman Foundation. NORC scholars will discuss their first-year findings as part of a 5-year, cross-sectional, nationally representative survey designed to capture an accurate measure of entrepreneurship status among the U.S population.
This extensive survey of more than 30,000 participants seeks to understand the pathways people take toward business ownership, as well as the factors that support and inhibit entrepreneurship in the United States. The survey data provides estimates of engagement with entrepreneurial activities in each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C., and in the 50 most populous metropolitan areas across the nation.
In this forum, we will examine initial themes from this timely survey and next steps for researchers and policymakers seeking to understand entrepreneurship in the population.

Emily Landry, Visiting Assistant Professor of Business Administration, Washington and Lee University Her focus will be on the job market, the first year as a professor as well as her experiences and any learnings to share as an early career faculty member.

In this session, the Kenan Institute’s Managing Director, David Knowles, and Director of Research Services, Ashley Brown, will share about how the Kenan Institute partners with academic researchers to translate and disseminate research, as well as the value that research has on both business and policy audiences. They will discuss ways that PhD students and early career researchers can work with their institutions to develop and promote their research. They will be joined by Travis Howell, assistant professor of strategy at UC Irvine and former Kenan-Flagler PhD student, who will speak to his experience of supporting translational work during his time as a PhD student. The session will include a short presentation and then time for a Q&A. Samples of the Institute’s work in translational entrepreneurship research can be found here.
