The Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences (BGES) and the School of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University invite applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Environmental Science and Environmental Studies with an emphasis on computational tools relevant to biological, environmental, and/or earth-sciences. This joint position is part of the Center for Research on the Urban Environment (CRUE), which links the environmental science and environmental studies programs. The successful candidate would receive a joint appointment in both departments, and tenure will be considered in BGES. The appointment will begin August 21st, 2023. Primary duties include conducting research and teaching in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Environmental Science and Environmental Studies.
CSU also anticipates hiring additional faculty with expertise in computational biology. Regionally, there are diverse options for collaboration with a variety of other institutions that conduct research and manage natural resources, including the Holden Forests and Gardens, Cleveland Metroparks, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, Cleveland Water Alliance, and NASA Glenn Research Center, as well as with nearby universities (e.g., Case Western Reserve University and Kent State University). Salary is commensurate with qualifications and competitive with other research-intensive universities. Startup funds are available and proportional to the potential for acquiring external funding.

- A Ph.D. in environmental science, earth science, ecology, natural resource management, an interdisciplinary environmental program with strong science foundations, or a related discipline
- One year of postdoctoral research experience, or equivalent, accumulated by the hiring date (August 2023)
- Experience with diverse tools for understanding environmental data and socioecological systems (e.g., data analysis, visualization, modeling, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS))
- Intent and potential to teach one cross-disciplinary course relevant to bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in environmental studies and environmental science
- Intent and potential to teach one course relevant to master’s degree programs focused on aspects of data science (e.g., focused on Big Data or data analytics applied to socio-ecological systems such as cities, their regions, and managed land or water resources)
- Research program focused on interactions between humans and natural systems (e.g., function of human-impacted ecosystems, such as urban or exurban areas; policy or management focused on biodiversity, natural resources, and/or ecosystem services)
- A record of interdisciplinary training, research, and/or outreach (e.g., experience linking natural science and policy/planning)
- More than one year of experience as a postdoctoral researcher (or equivalent experience) in environmental science, earth science, ecology, natural resource management, or a related discipline.
- Competence using freeware for data management, analysis, and visualization (e.g., R, QGIS, Python, mySQL), or other widely utilized tools for data analytics (e.g., MATLAB, ArcGIS)
- Skill with emerging and widely applicable tools (e.g., remote sensing, machine learning, network modeling/analysis, InVEST)
- Intent and potential to acquire external funding (e.g., from NSF, USDA, EPA, NASA, and/or NIEHS)
- Authorship of peer-reviewed publications in high-quality journals
- Substantial teaching experience (e.g., as an instructor of an undergraduate course)
- Interests and expertise that are complementary with CSU faculty, other regional partners, and environmental issues relevant to northeastern Ohio (e.g., urban ecosystems, water resources and ecohydrology, global change, environmental pollution, restoration ecology, biogeochemistry, natural resource management)
- Intent and potential to positively engage diverse students within CSU’s academic community
