Dear Conference Registrants,
Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this difficult time. UAA is first and foremost a community of committed, engaged and caring individuals. We are facing a new set of challenges, but we will prevail by doing what we do best – coming together and using our collective strengths. It is in this spirit that the Governing Board and the Executive Office have come to the following decision:
Given the establishment of travel restrictions by universities and local/state/national governments, and out of great concern for the health and safety of all registered persons, the 2020 UAA Conference, scheduled for April 2-4, is cancelled. This decision is based on a careful analysis and recommendation of the Executive Office, followed by thorough discussion and a unanimous vote of the UAA Governing Board.
We realize that this is disappointing news and that there are financial implications for many of you. UAA will suffer financially due to pre-conference expenditures that cannot be recovered, as well as cancellation fees that can be imposed by the conference hotel and other contracted venues. Over the coming months, we will work hard to address and minimize the financial impacts on UAA and conference registrants. You will receive an update on these matters no later than April 1.
In the interim, we need your input. Please complete this one-question survey by 1pm tomorrow, March 14 to help the Governing Board develop a refund strategy in light of the cancellation.

Dear 2020 UAA Conference Registrants,
First and foremost, we hope that you are in good health and in no way physically affected by the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak.
We are all concerned. Over the past weeks, the UAA Executive Office and Executive Committee of the Governing Board, have been monitoring the situation and investigating our options. In doing so, we are aware of the new CDC guidelines regarding travel and daily behaviors, the different U.S. state declarations of emergency, other conference cancellations, and the various university travel and group behavior restrictions.
As this situation is evolving, we are in discussions with the conference hotel and are now considering our options for this event. On Tuesday, March 10, the Executive Director, Assistant Director, and Executive Committee will meet to assess those options and chart a course forward.
We want to make a decision as soon as possible. But more importantly, we want to act with due diligence to protect our community.
We will issue a follow-up message regarding the conference no later than Friday, March 13.

We realize that some of you may be wondering about the status of the conference given the current coronavirus outbreak. The conference will take place as scheduled. If we determine that there is a direct health hazard in the conference environment, or if health officials declare an emergency, we will change this plan and notify you as soon as possible. In this unlikely event, we would honor your presentation acceptance and registration payment for a future conference. So, the worst case scenario would be a postponement.
In the interim, we have given our colleagues based in China and South Korea the option of deferring their participation. To date, conferences that have been cancelled all have one thing in common – a large number of participants drawn from China and Asia in general. This is particularly the case for technology-related meetings.
UAA has a very solid group of 1005 other registrants who plan to attend. During the conference, we will encourage a few simple practices such as refraining from handshakes and close body contact, as well as reminding anyone with a cold or sinus condition to use extra care when sneezing and/or coughing. We will make sure everyone has easy access to hand sanitizers and tissue!
For now we are planning for a great conference!
