Assistant Teaching Professor in Environmental Planning

Description

Arizona State University has developed a new model for the American research university, creating an institution committed to excellence, access, and impact. The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) at Arizona State University is seeking to hire an Assistant Teaching Professor, with a preferred start date of August 2023. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible appointment, renewable on an academic year basis (Aug 16 – May 15). The successful candidate will contribute to teaching in SGSUP’s Bachelor of Science in Planning (BSP) and accredited Masters in Urban and Environmental Planning (MUEP) programs in a variety of modalities (in-person, hybrid, and online). In addition, qualified candidates will lead applied research opportunities within SGSUP’s Planning Program, including opportunities for student research and service-learning within planning courses.Duties will be focused on three primary areas: (1) developing and teaching course curriculum, including immersion and online course content across the Planning Program; (2) developing research projects, including leading applied research projects with an emphasis on tribal planning, geodesign, and/or environmental planning; and (3) strengthening connections between SGSUP and tribal communities within Arizona, including opportunities for training and student learning . The Assistant Teaching Professor will be responsible for up to eight (8) courses each academic year, which will include offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, the Assistant Teaching Professor would be eligible for up to two (2) course releases, modifying the teaching requirements to six (6) courses each academic year, to accommodate: (1) active research in the areas of tribal planning, geodesign, and/or environmental planning; and (2) service that aims to strengthen connections with tribal communities and expand SGSUP’s ongoing efforts in the arena of tribal planning.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in urban planning or related field.
  • Demonstrated success in engaging with the tribal planning community and/or practical experience in tribal planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Evidence of research or teaching in the area(s) of geodesign, and/or environmental design.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse students, faculty, and staff populations and communities
  • Evidence of teaching or mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students in the planning discipline.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching online and/or developing online educational materials.
  • Proficiency in the Canvas learning management system
  • Demonstrated success in engaging with the professional planning community and/or practical experience in the planning field
