The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure eligible Assistant Teaching Professor position in urban planning with an anticipated start date of August 2023. Subsequent academic year renewals (Aug 16 – May 15) are contingent on satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the unit. Supplementary summer teaching may be available.The successful candidate will contribute to teaching in SGSUP’s Bachelor of Science in Planning (BSP) and accredited Masters in Urban and Environmental Planning (MUEP) programs in a variety of modalities (in-person, hybrid, and online). Duties will be focused on developing and teaching online classes, although in-person instruction will also be required. The Assistant Teaching Professor will be responsible for 8 courses each academic year that may include (but are not limited to): Introduction to Urban Planning, City Structure and Planning, Economic Development Planning, Planning Research Methods, and others. Some of the instructor’s course load may include assisting in the development of new courses or transition of existing courses into online teaching modalities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in urban planning or related field with substantial professional experience.
  • Evidence of teaching or mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and manage multiple tasks
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse students, faculty, and staff populations and communities

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching online and/or developing online educational materials and course evaluation
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching, for example, as evidenced by success in meeting the needs of underserved and underrepresented student populations
  • Proficiency with learning management systems such as Canvas
  • Demonstrated success in engaging with the professional planning community and/or practical experience in the planning field
  • Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)
