Sponsored by:

Organized by:
Kerry Fang, Florida State University and
Leslie Martin, University of Mary Washington

Description:
Teaching statements are essential to graduate students and faculty members, forming a crucial element of job applications, promotion and tenure files and teaching award nominations. This colloquy session (The Urbanist Teaching Statement Blueprint: Creating a Compelling Narrative – Part I) features experienced scholar-teachers sharing their insights, strategies, and personal journeys in constructing effective teaching statements. Panelists will explore how to frame some of the challenges often faced by urbanists, such as the difficulties of teaching community-engaged courses, and challenges often faced by faculty of color, such as biased teaching evaluations. By offering practical advice, lessons learned, and real-life examples, this colloquy aims to empower educators to craft teaching statements that reflect their pedagogical philosophies, highlight their teaching accomplishments, and resonate deeply with reviewers.

Participants will also engage in Part II of this two-part series – The Urbanist Teaching Statement Blueprint: Creating a Compelling Narrative – Part II (Roundtable Session/Workshop), where they can actively refine their draft teaching statements with the guidance and support of session coordinators, presenters, and fellow participants. This interactive session will offer hands-on peer-to-peer learning experience and fine-tune their teaching statements for maximum impact.
