The Department of Financial Planning, Housing, and Consumer Economics at the University of Georgia invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Consumer Economics and Housing.
Position:
Assistant Professor in Consumer Economics and Housing (nine months, academic appointment, tenure track, 50% research, 50% teaching).
Start date:
August 2024 or as negotiated.
Minimum Qualifications:
To be considered for the position of Assistant Professor, the applicant must hold an earned doctorate in consumer economics, consumer behavior, housing studies, community development, policy analysis, or a closely related discipline with computational expertise in Geospatial Analysis, experimental design, and other quantitative methodologies.
Appointment to rank of associate professor will be extended to individuals with at least five years as assistant professor (eligible for promotion to rank of associate professor upon appointment) at a comparable institution and must show clear and convincing evidence of high levels of attainment in teaching and research and commensurate national or international recognition related to developmental science and/or family studies. The successful candidate must show evidence of, or clear potential for, successful teaching at the graduate level and securing external research funding. Preferred Qualifications:
At least one degree in Family and Consumer Sciences is preferred.
Responsibilities:
The faculty member will have a 50% Research / 50% Teaching nine-month, full-time appointment in the Department of Financial Planning, Housing, and Consumer Economics, but will be expected to collaborate across campus on research, outreach, and teaching. The candidate is also expected to teach courses, with a focus on Consumer Economics. The candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized research agenda and secure external funding on topics related to consumer economics, consumer education, consumer policy, or consumer decision-making and will ideally include some aspect of housing studies such as mortgage/predatory lending, at-risk consumers, community development, housing counseling, property management, discrimination, aging and the life-course. The ideal candidate will have research dedicated to the application of common methods to collect large-scale datasets or analysis using applications such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based tools and techniques. Their research will involve gathering, displaying, and manipulating of imagery, GIS, and historical data to study community-based problems related to housing and consumer economics among diverse populations. It is expected that the successful candidate will collaborate with others to grow and/or sustain all scholarly undergraduate and graduate programs and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Financial Planning, Housing, and Consumer Economics. The primary teaching assignment for the individual filling this position will be consumer economics-related courses supplemented with housing management and policy content. The hired faculty member will be required to advise undergraduate and graduate students, participate in departmental and collegiate governance and professional organizations, and pursue active membership in relevant professional organizations.

Department:
The Department of Financial Planning, Housing, and Consumer Economics is one of the four academic units in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. It offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees with an enrollment of approximately 320 undergraduate and 90 graduate students. Undergraduate programs include Consumer Economics (with an optional emphasis in Applied Consumer Analytics), Social Entrepreneurship, Financial Planning, and Housing Management and Policy (with an optional emphasis in Residential Property Management). The Department is staffed by 20 faculty members with expertise in consumer decision-making, consumer and family policy, financial literacy, financial planning, housing, and residential property management. Extension and public service faculty provide practical, research-based information to Georgia residents to improve the quality of lives and communities. The department provides research and outreach in support of local government through the Housing and Demographics Research Center.

Computational Social Sciences Cluster Hire
The position is part of a campus-wide Presidential Interdisciplinary Faculty Hiring Initiative in Computational Social Sciences that aims to recruit a total of 50 faculty members who will educate students and advance research in data science and AI. Rather than being housed exclusively in a single department; however, the majority of UGA’s newly recruited faculty will focus on the fusion of data science, AI, and computational social sciences in cross-cutting areas such as health and medicine, biomanufacturing, infectious diseases, integrative precision agriculture, ethics, cybersecurity, resilient communities, and the environment. Specifically, the candidate for these positions should bridge research efforts between Applied Social Science Interventions for Community cluster hires across the University in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, College of Public Health, and School of Social Work.
