DESCRIPTION OF WEBINAR
The field of urban affairs welcomes opportunities for applied scholarship and community engaged teaching, as avenues for faculty, students and community partners to come together to co-create and advance knowledge, and positively impact our communities. Despite being a high-impact teaching practice, good teaching with the community is time consuming, challenging, and does not fit into the “traditional” model of pedagogy. In this webinar, we will hear from leaders at universities that provide tangible support to community-engaged scholars. These leaders will share their approaches to designing supportive community-engaged institutional environments for students, faculty, and partners. We will explore how faculty can help promotion and tenure decision-makers and others understand the challenges and benefits of teaching with the community; as well as how to encourage our own institutions to embrace practices that would make often nebulous “support” for community engaged teaching more concrete.
