Papers are invited from scholars and practitioners with thoughtful, rigorous research, analysis and commentary on residential densification in urban areas, to further cross-national comparative conversations on the forms, challenges and outcomes of densification in countries around the world. We expect this project to lead to an edited volume or a special issue of a relevant journal. The final decision will be made in consultation with the authors who will be contributing papers to the project.
Densification, in the urban context, can be defined as any program or strategy designed to increase the density of developed urban land in order to accommodate a greater population. It is widely seen in many countries as a critical strategy to increase housing supply, reduce sprawl and environmental destruction, strengthen urban economies, and increase the quality of the urban physical and social environment.
Papers can address any relevant aspect of this broad, multifaceted subject. In all cases, however, papers should contextualize the subject, and should attempt to draw lessons useful for cross-national comparative analysis. Papers should generate discussion and will speak to one another across political, planning and economic systems, rather than being narrowly focused on a particular practice or case study.
The deadline for proposals is September 30, 2024. A detailed discussion of the issue, including an outline of questions and topics of interest and information about submission requirements can be obtained from Alan Mallach at amallach@comcast.net.
