The Urban Studies Program at Brown University invites applications for a three-year renewable, non-tenure track, full time Lecturer position in ecological urbanism. The position requires teaching 5 classes per academic year (typically two lecture courses and three seminars), including an “Introduction to Urban Studies” course, classes drawn from the candidate’s area of research, and a rotation as senior thesis workshop instructor every three years. A successful candidate will serve a three year rotation as the Director of Undergraduate Studies beginning in Fall 2026 in place of one class.
Particularly desirable areas of specialization include: the role of race, class, gender, and other forms of sociocultural difference in complex socio-ecological systems; urbanization and the urban-rural-planetary nexus; history and theory of urban political ecologies; climate migration and informal urbanisms; history and theory of environmental planning and design; community engagement and urban environmental movements; and other areas that consider cities and urbanization as part of broader ecological systems. Successful candidates will be able to teach classes in both conceptual issues and applied approaches and should be prepared to create opportunities for students to get involved in local urban environmental issues.
Applicants must have a doctorate in Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Geography, History, Sociology, Urban Planning or Design, or a related social science, humanities, or interdisciplinary field in hand in time for a start date of July 1, 2025. Excellence in teaching and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion are essential.
