This annual award, initiated in 2023, gives recognition to an article published in the Journal of Race, Ethnicity and the City (during the previous year) that is considered particularly outstanding as a scholarly contribution to the field of urban affairs. The award is sponsored by Taylor and Francis, the official publisher of the Journal of Race, Ethnicity and the City (JRE).

Eligibility Requirements
  • As a new award, the first group of articles that are eligible for consideration will be those published in Volume 1 (2020), Volume 2 (2021), and Volume 3 (2022). 

  • If your article was published in JRE in 2020, 2021 or 2022, you will automatically be nominated for this award. You do not need to do anything else.
Award Benefits

The recipient(s) of the award receives:

  • A special award plaque
  • A complimentary conference registration waiver (including meal + reception tickets) for each author for the conference at which the award is received (valued at $500+ USD)
  • Up to four (4) nights of complimentary lodging at the conference hotel for the year in which the recipient receives the award.
    • Co-authors may share this lodging benefit in an agreed division of nights.
    • If recipient(s) is not able to attend the UAA Conference in the year of the award, the lodging benefit may be deferred up to one year.

The plaque will be presented at the Awards & Recognition Program held during the annual UAA Conference. Following the conference, a press release will be prepared announcing the recipient(s).

Selection Process

Each spring, the award is determined by a committee appointed by the Chair of the UAA Governing Board.

As a new award, the first group of articles that are eligible for consideration will be those published in Volume 1 (2020), Volume 2 (2021), and Volume 3 (2022). 

The first award selection process will occur in November of 2023 and the award will be presented at the April New York conference in 2024.

In subsequent years, eligible articles will be those published in the previous two years. So for example, next year in the Fall of 2024, eligible articles will be those published in 2023 and 2024.
