The Opportunity

The School of Public Administration in the College of Community Innovation and Education (CCIE) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track assistant professor position, anticipated to begin in Fall 2024.

The selected candidate will contribute to the School of Public Administration’s mission by adding research and teaching expertise in the PAB Accredited Master of Science Urban and Regional Planning program. The ideal candidate will be able to teach multiple of the core planning masters courses at the graduate level. The ideal candidate will also be expected to contribute to the School’s Ph.D. in Public Affairs program. The ideal candidate should be highly motivated and proficient in the urban and community planning discipline and active in planning professional associations.

The School of Public Administration is particularly interested in candidates who have practical experience working in the planning field. We are open to scholars with research expertise in any area of planning. We welcome candidates from a wide range of academic disciplines, theoretical orientations, and methodological approaches. Experienced assistant professors are encouraged to apply.

The highly ranked School of Public Administration offers NASPAA accredited Master of Public Administration and Master of Nonprofit Management (first accredited nonprofit program in the world by NASPAA) programs, a PAB accredited Master of Science in Urban & Regional Planning, a Master of Emergency and Crisis Management, a Ph.D. in Public Affairs, undergraduate public administration, nonprofit management, and emergency management degrees, a first of its kind international dual degree in Public Administration/Nonprofit Management, and graduate and undergraduate certificate program and minors (Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Nonprofit Management, Public Administration, and Urban and Regional Planning). The School of Public Administration has one of the largest PA programs in the Southeast with active partnerships with state and local government and community nonprofit agencies. The School of Public Administration is housed in the College of Community Innovation and Education and is located in the state-of-the art facility with access to full equipped multimedia classrooms at the UCF Downtown Orlando campus.

CCIE is a one-of-a-kind academic unit with distinct, interdisciplinary expertise and potential for partnership with community stakeholders, conceived to address societal challenges and work alongside the community.  Established in 2018, the college offers undergraduate and graduate programs on the main campus and UCF Downtown.  At the heart of the college’s mission is the institutional commitment to transform lives and strengthen society by developing a unified vision and innovative solutions to complex social issues.  CCIE promotes innovation through state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research with social impact, contemporary teaching and learning practices, and preeminent service for the disciplines, the institution, and the community.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Urban and Regional Planning or a related field by time of appointment. Candidates with ABD status are expected to complete their PhD degree requirements by time of appointment.

The selected candidate must also have a record of an active and sustainable research agenda with a focus in their field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to teach Global Cities and the Capstone/Studio project, conduct applied research projects with students, and engage in program development.
  • Candidates with academic experience (teaching, GRA).
  • Candidates with demonstrated success in publishing high-quality research articles in top-tier international and national refereed journals or those who have completed a post-doc with an associated record of publication in the preferred research areas.
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of students and faculty and to engage community stakeholders.
  • Membership in the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and active in professional associations.
  • Has a research focus in one or more of the following areas: land use, environmental planning, and climate change; urban analytics and visualization; housing and community development; urban design and place making; social and economic development; transportation and mobility; global dimensions of planning; planning history/theory and policy.
