Seeking Volunteers: ICE Detention Center Mapping Project

ICE Detention Center Mapping Project

Community News submitted by: AJ Kim

Seeking volunteers: Fellow profs, graduate students, people with interns who have a few hours to commit to project work

Description of project:

I’ve just created an ICE Detention Center tracker (nationwide) for all active detention sites as of the July 2025 data.

By clicking on each point you can find:

  1. Name of Detention Center
  2. Address
  3. Type of Detention Center (BOP -Federal Bureau of Prisons, DIGSA – Typically Privately operated under State/Fed Contracts, GSA – Pub or Private, often pre-trial, SPS-Govt Owned Service Processing Center, USMS-US Marshalls)
  4. Total persons held at each site, as of mid-June, 2025
  5. Average hold time (in number of days)
  6. Non-criminal persons by percentage of total

Description of volunteer work:

  • Help keep the files up to date and most useful for friends/families/neighbors.
  • No GIS skills required – just someone who can update an excel or CSV spreadsheet with the latest numbers.
  • Update the data quarterly (or more often if we have enough volunteers).

Are you interested in helping?

Feel free to have interested (and trusted!) volunteers contact me directly. Trying to build out a team of volunteers to keep current on how many new centers are opening and re-opening every month.
