RECAP: New Ballot Format & Voting Procedure in 2026
At the Spring 2023 annual meeting, the UAA Governing Board discussed a proposal from UAA Executive Director (Margaret Wilder) to restructure the composition of the UAA Governing Board to advance UAA’s mission:
Through theoretical, empirical, and action-oriented research, the UAA fosters diverse activities to understand and shape a more just and equitable urban world. (Adopted March 12, 2010)
Historical data presented by Wilder indicated that over the past 20+ years, UAA Board composition typically included one or two non-U.S. members out of a total of 15. This limited global representation stands in contrast to the increasing internationalization of UAA journals and the diverse, global composition of conference attendees.
In response, a proposal was put forth for the designation of three (3 out of 15 total) Board seats for persons from countries outside of the U.S. This proposal was approved unanimously by the UAA Board. In Fall 2024, the Board charged the Bylaws Committee with submitting the necessary changes in the Bylaws to the UAA membership for a formal vote. In November of 2024, the proposed Bylaws change was approved by 91% of voting members.
In the 2026 election, there were a total of nine (9) open Board seats. Of these, seven (7) seats were available for Geographically-Unrestricted Nominees, and two (2) seats were available for Geographically-Restricted Nominees (reflecting the continuation of one Board member from outside of the U.S.).
