SPECIAL TRACK ON URBAN ENTREPRENEURSHIP
(Sponsored by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation)
Urban Affairs Association (UAA) Annual Conference
Washington, DC | April 2-4, 2020
***DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS: OCTOBER 1, 2019***
Given the continued importance of business development in urban employment and economic opportunities, the 2020 UAA conference will include a Special Track on Urban Entrepreneurship. This track is made possible with support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, which is particularly focused on bridging market gaps and growing entrepreneurial ecosystems.
With very little of the total capital flow to entrepreneurs geared toward women and people of color and 81 percent of funding coming through personal net worth, family wealth, or connections to networks, it is not a mystery why today’s make-up of entrepreneurs is overwhelmingly white, older, and male. Going forward, communities need to build the mechanisms and networks that help more people start new businesses. Further, with the nation’s changing demographics, it is both a moral and strategic imperative to ensure inclusion and equity as communities seek to grow local economies (Statement by Larry Jacob, Vice President of Public Affairs, Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation).
The Special Track on Urban Entrepreneurship welcomes papers that address topics such as:
• Entrepreneurial ecosystems
• Business development in urban neighborhoods
• Minority and women-owned business development
• Downtown redevelopment and employment
• Creative enterprise and job opportunities
• Smart cities and economic opportunity
To highlight the importance of these subjects, the Kauffman Foundation is sponsoring an award for the Best Paper in Urban Entrepreneurship, which will be presented at the 2021 UAA conference. A Foundation representative will be on hand to present the award at the conference. To qualify for the award, an abstract must be submitted, accepted, and the paper presented at the 2020 conference. After the conference, a paper must be submitted to the award selection committee. Paper submissions are due July 1, 2020. The award recipient(s) will be announced by September 1, 2020.
The UAA is North America’s leading urban policy research association. For nearly half a century, UAA has brought together an interdisciplinary group of social scientists, public policy, education, human services, and planning researchers, and policy practitioners to exchange information and ideas that promote the well-being of urban communities. The annual conference attracts over 1000 attendees and generates more than 200 sessions along with mobile tours and workshops.
