NEH-Funded Teaching Workshop on Place

This summer, Meghan Gough (VCU), Kate Howell (UMD), Andrea Roberts (UVA) and Thaisa Way (Harvard/Dumbarton Oaks) will host Towards a People’s History of Landscape (pt. 2) in Richmond, VA this summer, June 12 – July 8, 2024. This workshop will bring together scholars from across the nation to explore alternative approaches to scholarship and teaching landscape and place-oriented social and cultural histories, centering Black and Indigenous historical narratives in the founding of the United States and the cultural landscape of one of its earliest colonies, the Commonwealth of Virginia. We invite faculty and advanced graduate students to apply to join us for an exploration of place and pedagogy. The workshop includes a stipend to support housing during and travel to Richmond, Virginia. This workshop is funded through National Endowment for the Humanities. Applications close March 5, 2024.
