Call for Senior Associate Editors of the Journal of Urban Affairs (JUA)

Application deadline: September 1, 2026

Description of Role
Focusing on global urban research, the Journal of Urban Affairs (JUA) is among the most widely cited journals in the field. Published for the Urban Affairs Association, the journal provides a multidisciplinary perspective on issues of relevance to both urban scholars and practitioners, including empirical and theoretical research that advances an understanding of urban society in the global context.

The Journal seeks to appoint new Senior Associate Editors to supervise the peer review of submitted manuscripts and make recommendations to the Editor-in-Chief about their suitability for publication in the JUA. In addition, Senior Associate Editors act as ambassadors for the Journal among the wider community of urban scholars and practitioners, and support UAA’s professional development program for early career scholars.

Areas of Expertise and Experience Preferred
The Journal is particularly interested in scholars with expertise in certain areas of urban research and in certain regional contexts. These include:

The urban context of South Asian cities
Community and local economic development in North America
Chinese urbanization and urban issues
Housing and community development in European contexts
Given the role that Senior Associate Editors play, applicants must have prior experience in publishing their own journal articles, as well as serving as a paper reviewer.

Term of Service
The newly appointed Senior Associate Editors will serve a term covering October 1, 2026 to June 30, 2031.

Application and Selection Process
Please complete this brief application form and attach your CV. After September 1, a committee consisting of the JUA Editor and selected editorial team members will review applicants and contact finalists to schedule online interviews. Final selection decisions will be made by September 30.

Questions included in the application form: 1) your areas of expertise and research; 2) cities, countries and/or regions of your research, 3) previous publishing-related experience, and 4) why you wish to play this role.

Applications from individuals from across the globe, and of all backgrounds are welcome. The Journal particularly encourages women and candidates from underrepresented communities to apply. Senior Associate Editors work remotely, communicate electronically with the JUA editorial office, and receive support to participate in the annual conference of the Urban Affairs Association each spring.
