The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is searching for a full-time Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor with expertise in land-use and environmental planning. Candidates whose expertise includes local and regional governance, sustainability and climate, or ecology are particularly encouraged to apply. We are open to scholars who employ a range of innovative methods, ranging from data science and analytics to ethnography, to community-engaged research and decolonial approaches. While we prefer that candidates research and teaching engage questions of land use and environment in the U.S., we welcome those whose work incorporates a comparative or transnational perspective.
Full Position Description
Planning at Illinois seeks answers to today’s biggest social challenges through creative, multidisciplinary, and community-driven solutions. We live our university’s land grant mission while pursuing global impact and prepare practitioners and researchers to lead in the development of novel approaches to just, sustainable urban environments. The campus and the Department provide ample support for faculty to conduct interdisciplinary research and innovative teaching. Members of the DURP faculty are involved in a broad array of ongoing research and public engagement activities throughout Illinois, the U.S., and internationally. DURP faculty contribute courses to the Department’s three degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and Planning (BAUSP), Master of Urban Planning (MUP), and Regional Planning Ph.D.
Qualifications
Required– Assessment of applications will focus on expertise fitting the position description; research program; and approach to teaching research and engagement.
Applicants at the Assistant Professor level must have a promising research agenda and a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Applicants at the Associate or Full level must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research, teaching, and service. A Ph.D. in planning or related fields is required – ABD applicants who expect to complete their Ph.D. prior to the position start date are welcome to apply.

Salary and Appointment Information
This is a nine-month faculty appointment (paid over 12 months). The anticipated start date is August 16, 2027.
The budgeted salary range for the position is $76,000 to $85,000 at the Assistant Professor level, $91,000 to $110,000 at the Associate Professor level, and $115,000 to $135,000 at the Full Professor level. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate’s experience and qualifications, and budget constraints.
This position is eligible for sponsorship for work authorization, except for sponsorship of a new H1B petition that would incur the $100,000 fee.
