FACULTY POSITIONS IN URBAN STUDIES
(Assistant/Associate/Full Professor – Tenure-Track/Tenured)

The College of Integrative Studies (CIS) at Singapore Management University (SMU is seeking to make one tenurable appointment (at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level) in the area of interdisciplinary Urban Studies, broadly construed.

Senior candidates with a track record of leading international teams in externally-funded research programmes are especially encouraged to apply. Exceptional candidates at the Associate or Full Professor levels will be considered for tenure upon appointment. The CIS delivers the University’s Core Curriculum and also offers a suite of programmes including Singapore’s first and only individualisable major at the undergraduate level, a Masters in Sustainability, as well as interdisciplinary Master’s and Ph.D. programmes in Asian Urbanisms.

We are interested in candidates who are able to push the boundaries of research and teaching in what might conventionally be understood as “Urban Studies”. Candidates might have thematic research and teaching interests in areas such as, but not limited to, urban infrastructures (including smart cities), urban sustainability, urban ecosystems and ecology and/or coupled human-natural systems in cities. Candidates that can demonstrate bold interdisciplinarity in both research and teaching are particularly encouraged to apply, as are those with demonstrable experience conducting research in and on cities in Asia.

Applicants should be able to:

  • Design and deliver postgraduate a course on “Urban Studies: Theory and Method” to a diverse, multidisciplinary postgraduate audience
  • As necessary, design elective courses that will be delivered as part of the Asian Urbanisms Master’s and PhD programmes
  • Attract and supervise postgraduate research students
  • Contribute to undergraduate teaching for the SMU Core Curriculum (see ??https://cis.smu.edu.sg/core-curriculum/overview)
  • Conceptualise and execute high quality research, and develop grant applications, on urban-related issues in Asia, broadly defined
  • Participate actively in the research and educational communities at SMU, and contribute to at least one of the university’s three areas of strategic priority: Growth in Asia, Digital Transformation, and Sustainable Living
  • Contribute to the dynamic intellectual life of CIS, as well as to interdisciplinary dialogue and exchange with colleagues from other Schools (such Computing and Information Systems, Economics, Law, Business, and the Humanities and Social Sciences)
