EARLY CAREER

Alma H. Young Emerging Scholar Award. The annual award is given to a promising Ph.D. candidate or early career researcher whose work demonstrates a commitment to rigorous and impactful research and service. Read details and/or apply.

Janet Smith Emerging Activist-Scholar Research Award. (sponsored by The Voorhees Family and Individual Donors)  This annual award recognizes a promising Ph.D. candidate or early career researcher whose research record shows a direct relationship between activism, scholarship, and engagement with community(ies). ADVANCED CAREER

Contribution to the Field of Urban Affairs Award.  NEW SIMPLIFIED NOMINATION FORM  This award honors an individual whose body of work has contributed to defining the field and furthering the intellectual and professional development of emerging scholars. Read more to nominate.

Mary Helen Callahan Distinguished Service Award. NEW SIMPLIFIED NOMINATION FORM  This award is given on a periodic basis to an individual who has provided an outstanding record of service to UAA and/or the field of urban affairs. Read more to nominate.

MID + ADVANCED CAREER

Best Book in Urban Affairs Award. This annual award is given to a book that is well-written and based on rigorous research on an urban issue(s) within any national context. Only digital copies of nominated books will be accepted. Read details and/or apply.

Community Activist Award.  This award recognizes individuals (in the Vancouver Metropolitan Area – the site of the 2025 conference) who have played an ongoing role working on behalf and in partnership with urban communities within the state, particularly around issues of social, political, environmental and economic equity. Marilyn J. Gittell Activist Scholar Award. (sponsored by SAGE) This annual award is designed to focus on the research of an individual who is, or has been, engaged in field-based research in an urban context (anywhere in the world). The research would ideally incorporate direct engagement with local community-based organizations and/or local residents around a policy area of high importance. Read more to nominate.

Scott Cummings Distinguished Editorial Service Award.  The award seeks to highlight the service contributions of persons who play editorial roles. Nominations may be made by current and past members of UAA publications’ editorial boards, editors, and Publications Committee members. Read more to nominate.

Other Awards

Best Article Published in the Journal of Race, Ethnicity & the City Award (sponsored by UAA & Routledge | Taylor & Francis). Only articles accepted by the Journal of Race, Ethnicity and the City and published between 2023 and 2024 volume years are eligible for the 2024-2025 awards cycle. Read more.

Best Article Published in the Journal of Urban Affairs Award (sponsored by UAA & Routledge | Taylor & Francis). Only papers accepted by the Journal of Urban Affairs and published in the 2024 volume are eligible. Read more.
