Position Overview

We invite applications for the next Director of the Knowlton School to start as early as Autumn 2025. The future Director of the school should be a bold, creative, and collaborative leader capable of upholding the mission of the school. The Knowlton School seeks an academic leader who can advance conversations and reaffirm Knowlton’s unwavering commitment to research, interdisciplinarity, and education for students of all backgrounds as our professions evolve. The Director is responsible for cultivating a cohesive and collaborative climate and culture across the school’s three sections: city and regional planning, architecture, and landscape architecture. The Section Heads all report to the Director. The Director also represents the school at the college and university levels, leads all aspects of school administration, and fosters an environment where faculty, staff, and students can thrive. The position is open to applicants who may require sponsorship for a visa or other work authorization.

Qualifications
Required

  • Prior academic experience at a research-intensive university
  • Demonstrated track record of academic leadership, management, and collaboration
  • A record of teaching excellence and a commitment to health and well-being for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a focus on working constructively, decisively, and collegially with external and internal colleagues
  • Demonstrated faculty and student mentoring skills
  • Demonstrated impact through research, scholarship, or other creative work
  • A terminal degree in city and regional planning, architecture, and landscape architecture, or strongly allied field of study.
  • Credentials to be appointed at the rank of Professor in one of the academic sections within the Knowlton School (visit the school’s Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure guidelines)

Desired

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate, articulate, execute and/or steward a strategic vision.
  • Familiarity working with campus administrators and leaders
  • Interest in actively taking advantage of The Ohio State University as a comprehensive university
  • A willingness to mentor a wide range of faculty from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences
  • Experience with and/or curiosity for engagement across disciplinary boundaries
  • A commitment to cultivating an equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment for faculty, staff, and students
  • An understanding of and appreciation for professional practice
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with alumni, campus leadership, and other external stakeholders to expand financial resources for student aid, faculty research, hiring, and capital improvements

  • A list of 5 professional references upon request; 1 reference can be from outside academia, remaining letters must come from academics who hold the rank of Professor (or equivalent).
